Course Description

A great story starts with a strong beginning. In this four-week introductory course, participants will learn how to set up an improvised narrative for success by building a world and a protagonist that both the players and the audience will care about. This course is suitable for performers who are new to improvised narrative or who want to improve their narrative scenework skills, and is the prerequisite for Narrative Improv II, which will be offered in the same time slot in April. To get the most out of this course, participants should be comfortable initiating and playing a two-person scene with minimal direction, and have some experience with character work (i.e. playing a person who is different from you). *Registration Notes* Two $5 access tickets are available for this course. These places are intended for members of the Ottawa improv community who are in need of financial assistance and/or whose identities are underrepresented in the community. To use an Access Ticket, please apply code NARRATIVE1_0326 at checkout. If you have any issues with this process, please email classes@waywardimprov.ca. Please note that all of our course offerings are designed for improvisers with some experience (at least six months regular practice). If you are a beginner, we recommend that you check out our friends at The Improv Embassy. If you’re new to us, a member of the WIT team may follow up with you to confirm your experience. You must be 18 years or older on the date of the first class — no exceptions. WIT reserves the right to cancel and refund course registrations if participants do not meet the age or experience requirements. If you’re not sure if you meet the requirements, please email classes@waywardimprov.ca to confirm before registering. Please read our cancellation policy prior to registering. *Access Notes* This course will be held in the conference room (room B16) at Southminster United Church. This room is typically accessed by stairs, but a lift may be available with advance notice — please contact us before registering if this is required. Participants should wear clothes and shoes that are easy to move in, and bring a water bottle. There will be at least one 10-minute break near the midpoint of each class session.
